Why is it so hard to let go of our possessions?

Human beings love stuff. From cars and giant televisions to keepsakes from lost loved ones, we all value a wide variety of things. Buying them is easy, but throwing them away... that's another story. So, why is it that we have such a hard time letting go of our possessions?
